Human Rights
The Canadian Human Rights Act provides that all individuals should have an opportunity equal with other individuals to make for themselves the lives that they are able and wish to have and to have their needs accommodated, consistent with their duties and obligations as members of society, without being hindered in or prevented from doing so by discriminatory practices based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, disability or conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted.
The Ontario Human Rights Code provides that every Ontarian has the right to equal treatment, free from discrimination and harassment in employment, accommodation, goods, services, facilities, contracts and membership in vocational associations.
The Code prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed (religion),sex(including pregnancy and gender identity), sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status (including same sex partners), family status, receipt of public assistance(in accommodation) and record of offences(in employment only).
